Adventures in Colorado

A view of Pike's Peak from Woodland Park

We arrived in Denver wed at midnight, followed by a drive to C-springs about 1.5 hours away. Thursday was a day of adventure as I took Caroline on a long tour through the Rocky Mtns. Our tour started in Woodland Park, a small mtn town just west of C-springs. From there, we drove to Cripple Creek known for its casinos. The above photo is just outside of Cripple Creek. Our next destination was the prison town of Canon City, via CR 67 a windy road through the mtns.

We later learned why the map key showed the road in alternating white and grey....it means unpaved and maybe seldomly traveled, as shown by one of the three other travelers we encountered in the 24 miles of unpaved driving.

We were fortunate though, to find a rest area while traversing the quite drive and glad to know that outhouses are not a thing of the past!

It was really fun to encounter 2 tunnels bored right through solid rock. We have several tunnels under the water in VA, but this was our first through a mountain. I was excited to drive through such a tunnel, but not nearly as excited as my wife who had to stand in it and get a photo.

We eventually made it to Canon City, then on to Alamosa via Salida. In Alamosa we were blessed enough for me to recall where a member of the church there lived that I had grown to know rather well, Brad Mortensen. He was very welcoming and had us into his home. While there, we were able to get re-accounted, which was quite fun. After the Mortensens' home we met up with Mike and Amber Hartman. Mike was a young single adult while I was in Alamosa as a missionary and he hosted the pig roast farewell the night before I left Alamosa in March 2001. We then enjoyed quality time during our 2.5 hour drive back to northern C-springs.
