Turkey Day

So we had about 90 people at our house for Thanksgiving ...how about you?

I guess I should clarify that our house=my firehouse. Yup, had to work, so we had Turkey day come to the fire station. It's what we do on holidays and is always a good time. The table of food in the pic is just the appetizers and desserts...some of which ended up being put on chairs for lack of room on the table. We fried 7 turkeys, baked 3 hams, and had all the fixings and the only left overs were side dishes, no turkey or ham. Of course the best part is that our families get to climb on/in and check out all the fire trucks! I'm lucky enough to be at one of the two fire stations in our city that has 3 fire trucks and a medic unit. It was actually rather busy for a holiday, but luckily we had a few hours of down time to visit with family.
If you ever wondered, fire fighters are not generally the most religious or spiritual group, so prayer at the firehouse is usually individual, if at all. Holidays are a tad different. We always start the meal with a blessing and since I've been at #14, I'm the one called on to do it. After giving the blessing this year, an older man approached me and said, "You missed your calling young man." I asked what he meant and he said, "You clearly enjoy your job, but you should have been a preacher or a minister to the firemen." I thought it was kinda funny, but I did enjoy learning that some people other than my family that were present, appreciated the blessing.

This was the first time I could get one of my kids to wear my fire gear

Loved the pictures and your blog! Mom mentioned the fire station dinner and I have to admit I was a little MORE sad to be away this year! Glad you all had fun! Way to have an impact on the attendees! =)

chris just said he's not sure if we had better chances of having turkey at the fire station or in Kazakhstan... ;D

It is about time one of your children is 'at home' in your uniform. They most certainly ARE at home at the firestation and that is so neat to see. It is no wonder that children follow their fathers (I've never heard of one following mom, but I'm sure it does happen) into that work, especially when moms such as Caroline are so good at bringing the children to see Dad. What a choice experience!
