HOT?!

Sunday afternoon, we went to have lunch at my parents' house after church. My sister and her children joined us. As we relaxed after eating, I heard coming from the playroom, Kelsy say "Isabelle, don't you think she's hot?" My eyes got huge in shock! The following conversation occurred...

Mom: "Kelsy come here please."
Kelsy: "Yes, Mom"
Mom: "What did you just ask Isabelle?"
Kelsy: "Mom...." in her most embarrassed voice
Mom: "Well, Kelsy."
Kelsy: "I asked her if she thought the girl on TV was hot."
Mom: "What does that mean?"
Kelsy: "Its like if she thinks she's pretty."
Mom: "Next time, ask Isabelle if she thinks she's pretty, ok?"
Kelsy: "Ok."

Then off to the playroom she went. Later that evening, I told Josh about our conversation. So we called Kelsy down to our room to discuss where she learned this slang from. At first, she was very worried that she would get in trouble. After explaining that Mom and Dad want to make sure that she is learning appropriate things, this was her explanation of "Hot"

"I pulled my hair back while getting water at school and later Jacob told me Russell said that I was hot."

{Yes, Kelsy, but how did you learn what "hot" meant?}

"I just asked Jacob and he said that it meant I was cute."

All I could picture was one of the old time movies with a salsy scene of a girl pulling her hair back, getting water out of the fountain in slow motion while the boys drool! Yeesh! And she's only in first grade!

{Needless to say, Josh and I had a good laugh later}

Just because a child says something doesn't mean they understand its meaning. That cute girl, cute is so-0-0 many ways, is our case in point....

I've been working my way through some difficult ready, but TOTALLY worthwhile... Bringing Up Girls. I highly recommend it for anyone who has daughters. Perhaps because of said reading I just don't... and can't find this story funny... I see it as another symptom of the over-sexualization that has gone berzerk in our culture. I hope you'll look into the book. I think it may be at least informative, possibly helpful, or, at least, you'll understand what I'm talking about. Another reason I feel so strongly that homeschooling is a blessing Father has intended for many families... put off the over-sexualization for years when our children are better able to recognize it for what it is and deal with it appropriately.

I'm sorry if my previous comment upset you. I have no idea what it was actually about, but I saw your FB comment. My intent was simply to comment and share something if you were interested. Not to advise, constructively criticise... but if you don't want peeps to share their opinion about something, you just shouldn't share it. Hopefully your comment has nothing at all to do with mine and I'm just worried over nothing!
